Models for Urban Transformation: Waste Management in Fortaleza
Fortaleza City Hall shares insights into Re-Ciclo, its waste management initiative that integrates informal workers and e-mobility for a clean city.
Marisa Leitão and Nirlania Diógenes of Fortaleza City Hall explain how the Re-Ciclo initiative has transformed public perceptions around recycling and helped create a more sustainable, integrated city. Before intervention, overflowing landfills, low recycling rates, and stigmatization of informal workers created a polluting and dangerous waste management system. Re-Ciclo's holistic recycling program has combined door-to-door collection via e-tricycle with better wages and working conditions for waste pickers, achieving local and regional ripple effects.
