A major component of the “cove hardwoods” association of Appalachian forests, Tulip Tree is our tallest eastern hardwood species, forming a canopy-emergent layer above the crowns of adjacent trees. The species typically exhibits a strong central leader, growing very tall and very straight, with large tulip-like greenish-yellow flowers borne at the tips of the branches in late spring.
