Acer platanoides

First planted in the US in 1756, the Norway Maple gained popularity as an ornamental and street tree after the spread of Dutch Elm Disease in the 20th century. An invasive species due its fast growth and shade tolerance, the Norway Maple grows rapidly and tends to shade out native trees. It is the most common tree in the YEW. It can be distinguished from other maple trees by the milky latex created when its leaves or petioles are broken.
