Juglans nigra

The native Black Walnut tree is allelopathic, meaning that it produces chemicals which can inhibit the growth of other plants. When you’re in the YEW, you can look to see if there are less plants growing around the Black Walnut trees than there are around the other trees. The Black Walnut Tree’s valuable dark wood is used to make furniture and gunstocks. It produces a large fruit, a fleshy green drupe with a nut at its center.
